I have neglected to mention any of the shows in the Wednesdays at the Point series this summer, but I can’t let this evening’s event pass without filling you in on the talent.
Otra! is the premier Latin jazz band in the city (in my opinion). Javier and Elegant Gypsy are the support act. The concert begins at 6 PM.
The concerts, which were at various locations around Algiers Point in the past, have been centralized at the ferry dock. This location makes it very easy for music lovers on the east bank to simply take the ferry across the Mississippi River to the concert site. In case, you’re new to New Orleans or have never taken the ferry—it’s free!
The bassist Sam Price leads Otra! He is also a member of the Honey Island Swamp Band, which explains why we haven’t heard too much from Otra! this summer. The HISBEEs have been touring up a storm.
Javier Tabor (pictured) is one of the veteran Latin musicians in New Orleans. He has been playing around town since 1989 and has crafted a unique sound that mixes Latin rhythms and the flamenco music of Spain. This should be one of the best shows of the summer.
