This past Saturday night, I caught a set of Rebirth’s show at D.B.A. It had been a long time since I saw them play in a club and I was super impressed. They play their long-standing Tuesday gig at the Maple Leaf Bar tonight.
The band has undergone one significant personnel change since the last time I saw them live. Gregory “Coon” Veals has replaced Corey Henry, who is now playing full time with Galactic, on trombone. The two trombonists have a similar style. They came up together and performed for several years in the Lil Rascals Brass Band before moving on to different endeavors.
Rebirth recently won a Grammy award. It was the first time that a New Orleans brass band has ever been honored with the statue. One of the highlights of the set at D.B.A. was a rendition of the new song that they wrote in honor the New Orleans Saints Superbowl-winning season. The swagger coming off the stage was palpable.
Since the Grammy win, I have been told that their performances at the Maple Leaf have been packed. So get there early if you want to dance up front.
