Wednesdays at the Square continues this week with a great double bill. The Lee Boys open for George Porter Jr. and the Runnin’ Pardners.
The Lee Boys are part of a wave of gospel-inspired musicians who have moved into secular realms. Robert Randolph may be the favorite and a darling of the jam band crowd, but the Lee Boys are no slouches either.
Their performances are laced with sterling guitar lines and soaring vocal melodies. The band brings the experience of the Gospel Tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival to every performance.
George Porter Jr. (pictured performing with the 7 Walkers at the Temple on May 7, 2011) needs know introduction to readers of this space. He is a founding member of the Meters and one of the most in-demand bassists in the world. However, his band, which has evolved through many permutations, including a full horn section, over the years, has some new faces.
The saxophonist Khris Royal and the drummer Terrence Houston are young enough to be Porter’s grandkids. But they command the stage with a youthful presence that allows them to totally hold their own.
Wednesdays at the Square is held in Lafayette Square from 5- 7:30 PM.
