Tipitina’s is the place to be Saturday night when Kermit celebrates the release of his new album We Partyin’ Traditional Style! The show starts at 9:45 PM. Read on for some special news about the performance.
Ruffins has had a lot of musicians go through his band over the years. However, most of the musicians that record on his albums do not play in his band. They are the studio pros that producer Tracey Freeman and executive producer and Basin Street Records owner Mark Samuels use to create his sonically stunning releases.
We Partyin’ Traditional Style! goes one step further. Instead of the usual studio studs, it features the cream of the crop of local traditional jazz players.
On Saturday night, Kermit has the musicians who played on the album—Steve Pistorius on piano, Shannon Powell on drums and Richard Moten on bass—playing at Tips. I’m not sure, but I suspect that this will be the first time that Pistorius and Moten have played at the uptown hotspot.
Also, Corey Henry, the trombonist that now plays in Galactic and was Kermit’s longtime foil in the Barbecue Swingers, will make an appearance. Check the video above for an older example of their stunning rapport. Guest vocalist Mykia Jovan is on the bill as well.
If you haven’t heard the record yet, it is a return to Ruffins’ roots and features great renditions of standards that are more often heard at Preservation Hall and the Palm Court Jazz Cafe. This is going to be a great show.
See you there!
