The saxophonist and flutist has been in town for two weeks taking in the sights, sounds and seasonings while playing a number of night shows. For those who didn’t get a chance to see him with this own band or with his seminal group, the Greyboy Allstars, he is sticking around for one last show beginning this afternoon at 5 PM with the soul and blues singer Robin Barnes opening.
Karl Denson has a deep pedigree in modern jazz and funk. He was a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band for five years and scored a major hit with the guitarist/songwriter when Let Love Rule was released. Following that he was an apprentice-of-sorts for the great James Brown sideman, Fred Wesley.
He has also shared stages with a veritable who’s who in the music world including Jack Johnson, D’Angelo, James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Allman Brothers, Keane, and Maroon 5.
In 1993, Denson joined DJ Greyboy in creating Greyboy Records and released the legendary acid jazz staple, Freestylin’. Out of that collaboration, Denson formed the Greyboy Allstars, which became world renowned as the ultimate groove band, spreading their “West Coast Boogaloo” style worldwide.
This led to five straight ahead jazz albums by Denson on Minor Music, the last of which was released to rave reviews and featured Karl in a trio setting with Miles Davis alumni Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette.
Denson puts on an incredible show with his latest ensemble, the Tiny Universe. They should be rested from their last show this past weekend and fully tuned up. This is a rare opportunity to see him while the sun is shining. See you there!
