A new jazz club has opened at 1909 N, Broad Street. It’s an intimate venue that seats just 60 patrons. But because of its owner’s deep connections in the New Orleans music community the club has been able to book some of the most talented players in town including Nicholas Payton and Donald Harrison.
Tonight is no exception. The drummer Shannon Powell (pictured) has an extensive resume. He toured for years with Harry Connick, Jr. and plays regularly at Preservation Hall and Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse. He has also been a regular substitute in Dr. John’s band since the illness and subsequent death of the pianist and singer’s longtime drummer Herman “Roscoe” Ernest.
Powell is an effervescent performer who always has a smile on his face. Tonight his trio features another stalwart on the local scene, the bassist Roland Guerin. Show times are at 8 and 10 PM. (photo by Adam McCullough)
