The Open Ear Music Series in the Balcony Room of the Blue Nile continues to present some of the best creative music on the planet. Tonight’s players are Gebhard Ullmann (pictured) on tenor sax, Steve Swell on trombone, Barry Altschul on drums, and Hillard Greene on bass.
Benjamin at Valid Records says, “OK, here’s the deal: in fact here’s the real deal, for that is what they guys are. Not only are these individuals all incredible players with long lists of associates that include many of the LEGENDS of the music (Cecil Taylor, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, Rosewell Rudd, etc., etc.); not only are they all leaders, composers, organizers, and educators of note, they are also a working BAND of real style, not just another ad hoc aggregation.
I was very impressed by Ullmann’s big sound when he was at Open Ears two years ago, and I hope many of you remember Steve Swell when he was here with his Fire Into Music quartet (with Jameel Moondoc, William Parker, and Hamid Drake) for a very well attended and received show at TwiRopa.
I have no idea when Barry Altschul was last in New Orleans, but it was probably over thirty years ago (he’s been living in Europe) and I have no idea if Hill Greene has ever played here. So, this is a very rare and special occasion that also should not be missed.”
