The Good Doctor will take the stage of the newly renovated Joy Theater this weekend, exactly one month and one day after the release of his well reviewed Louis Armstrong tribute Ske-Dat-De-Dat…The Spirit Of Satch.
The album has not just struck a chord with critics and fans alike, but has been sitting at the top of the jazz charts for the past two weeks. A record full of Satchmo songs is a concept the pianist/ singer has been mulling over for a while. Two years ago he played a teaser track as an encore at Jazz Fest.
While the crowd will be treated to fresh and interesting interpretations of such perennial favorites as “What a Wonderful World,” (which the Nite Trippers promise to funkify), and “Mac the Knife” performed as a hip-hop cut on the recent release, the performance will also span the entire half-century career of the Crescent City legend.
It should be an especially interesting show because it comes at such a triumphant time for Dr. John and the Nite Trippers. Ske-Dat-De-Dat is the first release since Mac fired his long time band the Lower 911 and hired trombonist Sarah Morrow as musical director. It was a controversial move and many local New Orleanians were less than complimentary towards Ms. Morrow.
However, as producer of the excellent release it seems Ms. Morrow has proved the haters wrong once and for all. The Nite Trippers have definitely gotten their groove back (if they ever lost it at all). Fans are in for a great show!
Winter Circle Productions will present three levels of tickets for the performance. General Admission is $42.50 and includes standing room on the floor. For concertgoers who enjoy having access to the Joy’s lovely balcony, upper balcony seats can be purchased for $50. There is also a special VIP package available that includes a reserved seat on the lower balcony, one autographed CD of the new album and one limited edition show poster.
