Every Sunday in January, the saxophonist Martin Krusche will be cooking curry and serving it for free before his band Magnetic Ear performs at the AllWays Lounge on St. Claude Ave. in the Bywater. The curry should be ready by 8:30 PM and the band hits around 9.
Magnetic Ear features some of the best improvising players on the scene today including Wes Anderson, Charlie Halloran and Michael Watson on trombones, Daniel Oestreicher on baritone saxophone, Jason Jurzak on sousaphone and Paul Thibodeaux on drums.
If some of those names sound familiar it’s because they are all in-demand sidemen. Halloran and Jurzak are members of the Little Big Horns and Oestreicher just got off a long tour with Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews.
