This morning, Grammy-award winning trumpeter Irvin Mayfield announced the fourteen non-profit organizations that will receive funds from the annual concert series that occurs every August.
The concerts are returning to Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and Irvin Mayfield’s I Club at the J.W. Marriott New Orleans for “twelve night of music and twelve nights of giving.” The series extends from August 18-29, 2012.
Jazz vocalist extraordinaire Dee Dee Bridgewater (pictured) will be the special guest at the I Club from Saturday, August 25 through Wednesday, August 29. Doors open at 7:30 PM and the performance begins at 8:30 PM.
One of the highlights of the entire concert series is the Trumpet Battle between Mayfield and fellow trumpeter Kermit Ruffins. The two have waged this friendly faux-fight since the late 1990s and many of the showdowns have featured humorous interludes amid the virtuoso playing. One particular evening, detailed in my book, Mayfield showed up at Ruffins’ regular Wednesday night gig, with photographers in tow, to hype the upcoming battle like it was a boxing match.
This month, the Battle, dubbed Decision 2012, will take place nightly at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse between Saturday August 18 through Friday August 24. Doors open at 7:30 PM and the performance begins at 8:30 PM.
