Here’s a little tidbit about Troy from my upcoming book about New Orleans music in the 1980s and 1990s. Trombone Shorty was four when Danny Barker died and I had just started writing for the Louisiana Weekly. Barker was a major figure in the revival of the brass band scene and I was personally affected by his death. So I was having a hard time writing a standard obituary.
I decided to just interview people and musicians that were associated with Barker and string their comments together to create the story. I concluded my obituary with Troy’s comment because it was so profound. The four-year-old musician said to me, “If you knew Mr. Barker, you knew jazz.”
