On Thursday night, Mississippi-born singer/songwriter and guitarist Cary Hudson performs with his latest ensemble at Chickie Wah Wah. Hudson has been a critical darling for over 30 years beginning with his first band, the Hilltops, which he formed right out of high school. He was a founding member of the seminal alt-country band, Blue Mountain, which spawned fellow alt-country legends Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, and indie rock veterans, Wilco.
Cary was chosen as one of the Top Ten Alternative Country Guitar Players by Gibson magazine. He has played guitar for Bobby Rush, R.L. Burnside, Big Jack Johnson, Shannon McNally, Dayna Kurtz, and many others in his close to thirty years on the road. His songs have appeared in TV shows and movies including the George Clooney film Up in the Air.
The Piney Woods Players are a group of top-notch players based out of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The band features Katrina Miller on fiddle, Scott Chism on upright bass, and Lynn Terry on vocals. They have been backing Hudson for less than six months, but the band has gelled like they have been playing together for years.
Cary Hudson is now living in New Orleans while claiming “dual citizenship” with his home state. He will be also playing with the Piney Woods Players at French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
