Bastille Day and San Fermin in New Orleans

It may be mid July in the Crescent City but that doesn’t mean nothing’s happening. Saturday there are two big events that celebrate our city’s connection with the Old World.

Beginning bright and early on Saturday morning “the only in New Orleans” version of the Running of the Bulls, which has been a tradition in the Spanish city of Pamplona for decades, begins at 8 AM. The party continues throughout the day with music and a fair at the Sugar Mill.

There are no actual bulls involved, and the roller girls who chase people through the streets of Warehouse District aren’t as dangerous as those giant beasts that occasionally gore and kill people in Spain, it’s just as fun.

The only requirement to participate is that you wear a white shirt and a red scarf. Details to register are here.

Later in the day, after the heat passes, head over the Faubourg St. John for the annual Bastille Day celebration. It takes place on the street behind Café Degas and begins at 5 PM.

Norbert Slama et Raphaël Bas Satchmo Fest2012

Two French expatriates who make their homes in New Orleans will be performing along with Johnny J. and the Hitmen.

Norbert Slama is an accordion player and Raphael Bas plays gypsy-style guitar. Together they form Manouche Musette. Slama is actually much more well known across the pond than in the United States. Both are virtuosos. They will play traditional French music from 5- 7PM.

See you there!
