The drop-dead funk band that stirred things up on the music scene in New Orleans in the late 1990s is playing the late show at the Krewe du Vieux ball on Saturday night after the irreverent krewe’s annual parade. The parade route is here.
Of course, you will have to pace yourself and stay up late since a brass band jam and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux with special guest Ivan Neville are playing first.
I’ll let the band describe themselves for those not fortunate enough to have seen them in their heyday: “The ‘Skull is a sonic gumbo that is one part Funkadelic and one part Black Sabbath with generous helpings of Zappaesque runs and jazzoid horns.” That about sums it up.
They haven’t even played a gig together since October 2012 when they last graced a stage in the Crescent City. But I have it on good authority that the band has been rehearsing over the last two days in New Orleans and are promising a funky show emphasizing the danceable part of their complex musical equation.
Those jazzoid horns, described above, will be provided by saxophonist Michael Jenner and trombonist Rick Trolsen.
Tickets to the Krewe du Vieux Doo are available from krewe members, at the Louisiana Music Factory and at Up In Smoke on Magazine Street. Get ‘em today!
