7 Walkers at Tipitina’s

You asked for it, you got it—an early show at Tips. The band starts at 8 PM. The doors open at 7.

7 Walkers features Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead on drums, George Porter Jr. on bass, Papa Mali on guitar and Matt Hubbard on keyboards, trombone and harmonica.

What I like about this band is that the have their musical feet in two of my favorite styles of playing. The band can stretch out psychedelically into jam band territory. But they can also get down and funky courtesy of Porter Jr.’s rubbery bass lines and Mali’s stinging guitar leads.

The repertoire includes classics from the Grateful Dead’s catalog and great songs including several new ones written by Papa Mali and longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. One of my favorite songs that pops up on the set list with some regularity is Porter Jr.’s rendition the “Sugaree.”
