Long known as one of New Orleans’ most incendiary guitarists from his work with the Neville Brothers and the Funky Meters, Stoltz has also carved out a significant solo career. Tonight he begins a weekly series at the Maple Leaf Bar that will last through January.
His career with the Neville Brothers began in the early 1980s when he was part of a killer ryhthm section that included longtime Nevilles’ drummer, “Mean” Willie Green and the super funky bassist, Daryl Johnson. Stoltz appeared on the two biggest albums in the Nevilles’ discography, Yellow Moon and Brother’s Keeper, which were both produced by the Daniel Lanois, the mastermind behind some of U2 and Peter Gabriel‘s biggest hits.
Following his tenure with the Nevilles, Stoltz joined up with Papa Funk himself, the keyboardist Art Neville, the bassist George Porter, Jr, and the drummer Russell Batiste to form the Funky Meters. They were arguably more successful than their legendary late 1960s and early 1970s namesakes, the Meters.
