It may be literally freezing out this evening, but there are at least three ways to celebrate the beginning of Carnival season. It’s a long one this year, Mardi Gras doesn’t come until March 4.
Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana (pictured below with his wife, Joyce, preparing his 1997 suit) always symbolized the season for large numbers of New Orleanians especially those that follow the Mardi Gras Indians and live in the downtown sixth and seventh ward neighborhoods.
Though he passed in 2005, his memory still lingers and his family still participates in the age-old tradition. January 6 has been designated Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana Day by the City Council. There will be a wreath-laying at his statue in Armstrong Park at 4:30 PM and then a film showing and panel discussion at the Tremé Center at 6 PM.
In the French Quarter, the Krewe of Joan of Arc will begin their annual parade at 6 PM around the historic district. This krewe is relatively new having started in 2008, and I have never seen their parade. I hear it’s a good one though. Leave a comment if you check it out.
Finally, the Phunny Phorty Phellows will be boarding the streetcar for their annual ride at the Willow Street barn at 7 PM. The festivities start around 6, as the krewe members arrive and the dignitaries from the Krewe of Oak toast the PPP. See you there!
Happy Carnival!
