Alright Memphis, another week in, another weekend! This Friday and Saturday will have you rocking out to a supergroup from the 90’s, mixing styles at CD release party of one of Memphis’ most fun live bands, getting down to music by a bunch of girls who aren’t named Trisha and much more.
Friday (5/25) starts the weekend right with plenty of options. Allstar metal group Down will be playing at the New Daisy. Consisting of Phil Anselmo (Pantera), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Pat Bruders (Crowbar), and Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod), the band features cornerstone figures from many of metal’s most active and influential acts.
Also billed are bands Harp and Black Tusk, ensuring your evening will be full of thrashing around and rocking out.
Across town at the Young Avenue Deli, Copper Possum will be celebrating their most recent effort with a record release party. The Memphis 4some have been playing around town for years, dabbling in blues, jazz, country, rock, and more.
Copper Possum is a great show anyway, the fact that they are playing some new material is something that’s gonna make this show great. Come out and show your support for some fantastic local music!
Also on Friday, The Trishas will be playing at Otherlands CoffeeBar. The ladies’ brand of country-folk is centered in traditional stylings of the mid-south. Their musicianship alone makes them worth seeing, but seeing as they are all quite attractive, actually seeing them is half the fun.
Saturday (5/26) has some loosey goosey vibes going on across Memphis. Pierced Arrows will be bringing their uber loose interpretation of rock & roll to The Hi-Tone Cafe. The punked out metalheads play a unique blend of noise and throwback rock in a seemingly unstable package that always delivers. Also featured are rockers Don’t and Fuzz giving the evening a full night of drunken rocking out.
At the Levitt Shell, Jimbo Mathus & The Tri-State Coalition will be showing off their new sound inspired by the Alan Lomax Mississippi field recordings from the 50’s. The result is a go-with-the-flow loose attitude that gives their performance a healthy amount of the human element resulting in one hell of a show. Mathus also comes with a healthy back catalog filling out the evening and giving you plenty of reason to go out and enjoy the weather!
