Hey, Memphis! No matter how long you stick around, you’re always bound to leave some kind of impression.
This weekend we’ll have you dancing to the beat of a different drum, doing the Memphis folk thing, and seeing the last show at one of Memphis’ most important venues. I hope you’re off the clock—it’s time for some weekend shots.
Friday(2/22) starts off differently than you’d expect. Something you’d never expect in town, the host of one of the world’s biggest recurring dance parties is playing a set at one of Memphis’ most cozy bars. Memphis’ own Handsome Mark has managed to bring Mr. White from his regular gig of hosting Sensation—a 40,000+ attendee dance event that happens around the world— to Mollie Fontaine Lounge.
He’ll be playing to a little more low-key crowd than usual, but you can expect the seasoned DJ to work the space proficiently.
Over at Poplar Lounge, Friday is gonna be folk night. Among The Cranes and Reverent Hitchhikers both have slots. Among the Cranes have been building up a fanbase around town for a while now, and the Hitchhikers just released an EP. Come out to hear Memphis guitar music.
Saturday (2/23) has a few things that we could mention, but really, there’s one show that stands out. The Hi-Tone Cafe will be having its very last show this Saturday. After being a Memphis staple for over 15 years, the famous venue will be closing its doors, leaving Memphians wondering where to go for any midsize show.
For such a special occasion, the Hi-Tone has booked some big name local acts. Garage rock legends Oblivians are back together as of late, and thus perfect for Hi-Tone’s departure. Not only that, charming punkrockers The Barbaras are also back together to play a set.
Come out to say goodbye to the place where way too many people have gotten way too drunk and proceeded to act on way too many bad ideas. Good times.
