Hey Memphis! How was your week? Hopefully full of good times and great things. This weekend we’ve got you checking out an album release, getting into some Memphis r&r, and flying with the flocka. I hope you don’t have enough on you to get charged, It’s time for some weekend shots!
Friday (2/1) starts off with a gnarly bang. Psychedelic/ blues/ rock Graveyard have come all the way from Sweden to tour the states, landing this Friday at The Hi-Tone Cafe.
Graveyard is three albums deep, having released the most recent Lights Out in October of last year on the German heavy metal label Nuclear Blast. The Shrine supports. (We reviewed the DC show here. —Ed.)
The evening also has the weekend’s first release. Reverent Hitchhikers are set to debut their EP of material that’s got folksy undertones with hints of drunken gypsy singalongs at Newby’s. Michaela Caitlin supports with her own collection of sauced out songs that teeter on the fine line between sexy and macabre, as well as more optimistic material from Among the Cranes.
Quick question, do you go hard in the motherfuckin’ paint? Well then there’s really only one place for you on Friday. You should take the short trip down to Oxford, MS to see Waka Flocka Flame at the The Lyric. Waka’s riding waves from 2012’s Triple F: Fans, Friends, and Family, AND he’s just recently announced Flockaveli 2 which should arrive later this year. Mayhap he’ll play some new tracks from the album at his show?
Saturday (2/2) starts with some Memphis staples playing some good ole RAWK N’ ROWL. Fast on the upswing, Swoon has got a fancy new album and hype coming out their ears that they’ll be showing off at Minglewood Hall. They sell a catchy brand of alternative rock that’s hardcore enough to get your bro friends throwin’ bows with enough sweet lyricism to get your girl singing along. On over at the poplar lounge, there’s a record release a-happenin’. Memphis’ own Big City Circus will be partying celebrating the release of their album Change Anything at the Poplar Lounge. Big City Circus has a sound that fits in with any good 90’s pop rock with shiny major chords and huge choruses repeated until you’re singing along. Fellow pop rockers Lately David Support.
