Hey, Memphis! How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Forget about that one were you said you weren’t going to do that thing anymore… That just isn’t gonna happen. Although you might have had to ditch a few, there’s still one resolution you can stay true to: Go to see more local music!
This week we’ve got you getting into some Memphis folk, slowing down with some sludge metal, and celebrating the life of the king. Today’s the day to start living life like you should; it’s time for some weekend shots!
Friday (1/4) brings out all the crazy mother folkers. The first show you should check out is that of a rising Memphis star who’s amassing a crowd with her powerful songwriting and dry lyricism (the fact that she’s gorgeous helps too) at the 1884 Lounge. Kait Lawson released her debut album last year to positive reviews and a growing number of venues that see booking her as a must. Her on-stage performance is directly located at the intersection of infectious charm and sultry songwriting. Fellow singer-songwriter Rob Baird is also providing a full night of intimate music.
Another great show Friday is up-and-coming folk act Among the Cranes at the Poplar Lounge, who seem to be on any folk bill that passes through Memphis and have been featured on their own ditty.tv in 2012. Also billed is Memphis staple Lately David. Known to “play pop music, loudly,” the longstanding catchy chorus kings have been playing around town for years and have a reputation for their tight arrangements and earworm melodies.
Saturday (1/5) begins by observing a religious holiday. It is the birthday of the King. Elvis’ birthday is January 8th, and to celebrate the Memphis Symphony Orchestra will recreate the 1973 “Aloha from Hawaii” concert at the Cannon Center. It’s one of the few all-ages shows that I can recommend, so make sure to bring your fam! Tickets are $5 and available on the Orchestra’s website.
If Elvis isn’t nearly as nitty, gritty, and downright evil enough to fill your cup of tea, there’s something out there for you. Sludge metal Galaxicon will be playing The Hi-Tone Cafe. Not only is it worthy to see to catch up on Galaxicon’s new sound (promoting their Old Gods album that was released in 2012), but it may be one of the last shows you can see at the soon-to-be-closing Hi-Tone! Thrones supports.
