Hey Memphians, we hope the past five days have given you enough rest to tide over for this busy weekend. We have you getting down to some live band dance music, getting real with a Texas legend, and getting into a brand new release from some underground Memphis heat. Just in case you have music rabies, here’s a strong dose of Weekend Shots.
Friday (8/31) starts you off on your feet. If you like party music but wish you didn’t have to stare at the back of a laptop when you’re getting down, Newby’s Memphis has you set up with sets from Kphonix and Arpetrio.
Kphonix are fast becoming a Memphis dance staple with a mixture of rave/house/and bass music that emphasizes live instrumentation and future Bowie-esque vocals. Arpetrio makes jam heavy grooves with thick riffs, passed between guitars and synths meant for dancin’, as evident on their latest release Triggology.
Next up is Austin, Texas Music Legend Jon Dee Graham at The Hi-Tone Cafe. Graham has made a huge impression in Austin and the surrounding area, earning himself an induction into the Austin Music Hall of Fame thrice over. His latest album Garage Sale continues his lyrical exploration into themes of adulthood, marriage, work, and other adulty things.
Saturday (9/1) has a special treat for those in the know on Memphis hip hop. There’s a collection of young rappers from Memphis that have emerged in the wake of the success of intellectually bent Cities Aviv. Royal-T is the frontrunner of the movement with educated lyricism over sample based super warm beats. His album LVCKAH LVCIANO release will be comsimated this Saturday at the The Hi-Tone Cafe.
Supporting talent is also local with Preauxx and Austin Wyatt so come out to hear what Memphis budding underground hip hop scene is sounding like.
Although we rarely pour shots on the first day of the week, Sunday (9/2) has a special treat for all who want to party before they contract a heavy case of the Mondays. Indie folk rock power outfit Magnificat will be playing at The Court House Co-Op. Magnificat is fronted by Memphis’ own Michaela Caitlin– a young singer/songwriter who has paid her dues on the solo folk circuit and is causing some buzzworthy waves with a full band behind her. Be sure to go get sweaty jamming out to their tunes all Sunday evening long.
