Just because we’re done with Shots doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to do on the weekends.
If you’re looking for something fun and upbeat to do, Memphis is hosting one of Murfeesboro’s best bands on their way to SXSW. Glossary is playing at the Poplar Lounge tonight with some great guests—if you’re looking for some hearty guitar music on a Friday, this is the place to go.
Glossary have been reppin’ the volunteer state since their 2001 debut This Is All We’ve Learned About Living, an engaging sing-a-long effort with an indie rock lean. Since then, the quintet’s sound has evolved and matured, in the process picking up aspects of folk, blues, country, and good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. 2011 saw their most recent release with Long Live All of Us. A little more experienced and a little bit wiser, their sound these days is more laid back and regionally inspired, as on the album. Heavy on the country, the collection of songs has a matured sense of composition backed by solid guitar and piano work and some uber-tasty horns.
They’ll be supported by Kait Lawson, the most charming singer/songwriter in Memphis. Lawson’s got a recent release herself with 2012’s Until We Drown, a countryish/folkish pop album with impressive arrangements and plenty of clever lyricism.
Since there’s nothing wrong with making fun things more fun, The Kernal will also support. The Kernal is yet another representative for the TN music scene, hailing from Jackson, who make “imaginary country” (their words, not mine). The three-piece is also on their way to SXSW, so be a good person and come out to wish them and the Glossary good luck.
