The Lineup: The Sultana, Minivan Blues Band, Bob Dylan w/ Leon Russell

I like to juxtapose things that are polar opposites, because it amuses me. Like pulling up next to really fancy cars in my piece-of-crap Honda and revving the engine. Or being really loud in a waiting room full of silence. Or sneaking up to one of the many beautiful women I creep out in bars on a weekly basis by standing next to them and saying nothing.

Scratch that last part. Anyway, that’s my theme this week. Something old, and something new(ish) in a similar vein.

Friday, July 28 at Minglewood Hall: The Sultana with Minivan Blues Band

This week, I’m writing about the opener of this show. Don’t get me wrong – Minivan Blues Band, even with the humdrum name, is a damn good time. But let’s talk about The Sultana for a bit.

I used to live with the drummer from this band, and I watched them grow from a two piece to a three piece and then eventually into the 6 piece that they are now – Guitar, double bass, drums, cello, banjo, and additional percussion. Nerd alert: I used to sit in my room while they were practicing in the front and play my guitar along with what they were doing. None of them know this (until they read this column that is), but I know how to play almost all of their songs.

Most of their initial EP was recorded at Ardent Studios (you can listen here), but the real magic in this band is seeing them live. Listen to singer Jonathan Hart’s songs come to life with the full band is a great deal of fun. Minor keys shanties and songs about wanting and getting older are animated by rolling banjo and swaying cello and two percussionists in sync. Get out and see these guys. Definitely worth your attention on a Friday!

Saturday, July 29 at Mud Island Amphitheater: Bob Dylan with Leon Russell

This one is a no brainer. Get in the car, make your way allll the way downtown (unbearable, I know), and cross the river to the island. Get in line, wait, and get your butt in a seat because this is probably one of the last chances you will ever have to see a living legend. Not many people have an adjective namesake (If I hear one more new artist called Dylanesque…)

And then look at the opener! It’s freaking Leon Russell! The dude that dueted with Willie Nelson on “Heartbreak Hotel!” And he wrote “Delta Lady!” And he’s been covered by Ray Charles for Pete’s sake!! Ooooohhh man. Both Dylan and Russell have been clients at the studio before my time, but what I wouldn’t have given for a chance to see them at work. Looks like this is the closest thing. Get on out!
