“So, what’re you doing this weekend?”
“I dunno. What about you?”
“I dunno.”
If this sounds like a conversation you have on a regular basis, you’ve come to the right place. This is The Line Up: a definitive (or at least highly opinionated) look at what’s good to see in Memphis this weekend.
First up, Gogol Bordello at Minglewood Hall on Friday night, 4/8.
I’ve never actually seen them live before, but I’ve been hearing things… good, mysterious, gypsy rumors about the show they put on and let me tell you, I’m pumped. We know all too well around here the magic that can result from the pairing of talent with production, and their most recent record, having been produced by the venerable Rick Rubin, proves to be no exception. GO SEE THIS!
Next.. Felice Brothers at Hi Tone Cafe on Saturday night, 4/9.
A song is a story, right? And a songwriter, a storyteller. Certain people just have the ability to get the story across through the song, and these guys are no exception. Add to that the fact that Diamond Doves (read: Elvis Perkins in Dearland, minus Elvis Perkins) is opening, and we’re looking at a very promising show. GO SEE THIS!
Finally.. The Cave Singers with Holly & The Heathens at Hi Tone Cafe on Sunday night, 4/10.
My new favorite Youtube comment of all time came to me while skimming through Cave Singers videos the other day.. “Did someone knock over a beard truck?” These guys, 1/3 of whom were in Pretty Girls Make Graves, are sure to please – especially in tandem with local favorites Holly & The Heathens. GO SEE THIS!
Checking out a band live is (in my opinion) the best way to really take in everything they have to offer, and this weekend will provide ample opportunity to do just that in Memphis. Go see live music!
