So, I saw Beck at Bonnaroo in 2008. Like 5th row, close to the middle, the whole bit. After the over 2 hour performance with puppets and a full band and at one point a full band of puppets, my buddy Jason described the show as a “two hour party.” I agreed with him – that was definitely the best way to describe what the main stage turned into during Beck’s moment.
Then I saw video footage of a Girl Talk show. Now THAT was a party. Sorry, mini puppet version of Beck.
First off, since when do people actually go to a venue, NOT A CLUB, to see a dude behind a computer, spinnin’ stuff? I’ll tell you: since this dude’s been around.
Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, has quickly become the king of mashups since his debut in 2002. Since then, he’s released 5 full lengths and an EP. His latest, All Day, was given away for free (get it here). This thing has got 373 samples in 71 minutes of music. And the hooks he uses are hooks indeed. You’ve definitely heard most of the record before if you’ve heard any music in the last 40 years.
And this dude’s live shows are nuts. It’s a constant dance party, with Gregg often getting some of the crowd to join him on stage (or vice versa!)
Girl Talk is playing at Minglewood (for the second time now) on Monday the 17th. Penguin Prison, from New York, is opening.
