Hey, kids, it’s about time to break out your hoola hoops and put away all those ambitions to be hygienic. Festival season is right around the corner, and there are 1500 bands that you haven’t heard of waiting to change your life if you only show up.
A good place to start looking for some great live music is the Head for the Hills Festival. The little festival that can may not have your favorite pop star who’s performin’ on the Grammys, but it will be affordable enough so you can bring your own party favors. The best part? The line-up they do have is riddled with amazing musicians and experienced producers.
One act that’s getting the spotlight at Head for the Hills is an electronic producer who’s been kicking around tracks for years now—Eliot Lipp. Last year saw the release of his album Shark Wolf Rabbit Snake, his debut on Pretty Lights Music. I recently got a chance to talk to the electronic producer about music and vinyl.
What have you been up to lately?
I’ve been writing tons of stuff.
With a 2013 release?
Yeah, I’m looking forward to release more music this year.
So your second release for Pretty Lights Music? How did you get started with those guys?
I met Derrick years ago through touring. He told me he was starting a label and asked me to link up to him, but it took me awhile before I had a record. I finally got back to him, and I’m glad to be working on PLM.
What do you find most appealing about being a part of the label or its roster?
All the crew is like-minded individuals that have their own style, but there’s still a common thread of everyone having a soulful element that they bring to the table.
Been shopping for any good vinyl lately?
While I was touring for a lot of this year I had this tour manager that was a huge record collector. He knows every good record store. Every time I’d tour with him we’d go to fancy record stores in every town.
What kind of music do you look for when you’re out?
I like finding stuff that’s totally different. I have a friend that does some really heavy shit, like heavy metal, but rapping, kinda like a modern Faith No More. It threw me off guard. I like things that catch me off guard, so I was all about it.
Any great finds?
Ray Bryant. I started buying everything from him. I love Jazz Piano. Everything I’ve heard by him so far.
