Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
If you’re a music blogger, or as I like to think of myself—someone who used to hang out in record stores and now bounces around on a computer—you’re probably getting ready for one of the biggest musical orgasms of the year. Yee haw! It’s time for SXSW—the annual indie rock battle royale of the bands!
“South-by” is a ritual for those of us who are passionate about discovering new bands. Funny, I refer anyone who turned up after 2000 as “new” but seriously, never in the history of rock n roll has there been a better time to “surf” for new music. The internet has triggered a “tsunami” of sorts. The music industry, the old gatekeepers of the music market, have been overrun and nowhere is this more evident than on the streets of Austin for these upcoming days.
So, I’m calling this week’s Idelic Hour “SXSW Handicappers” because this year SXSW has asked me to moderate the opening day panel at the music conference. The SXSW powers that be said we need to know who’s new and buzz’n, so I hope you give a shit about new bands because this Idelic Hour is chocked to brim with new artists.
Dig’em—all shapes, sounds, and from all parts: Oberhofer, The Civil Wars, Kurt Vile, Twin Shadow, Turbo Fruits, Those Dancing Days, Adanowsky, Oh Land, Smith Westerns, Ty Segall, Wise Blood, Alexander, Scattered Trees, Those Darlins, Sarabeth Tucek, Kylesa & TV Girl all make the cut as stand-out’s from my list of nearly 100 cool bands playing in a sea of 2000!
So many cool bands . . . it’s overwhelming. Just check the mix. . .
