Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
This clear and sunny day here in the City of Angels makes me want to croon, “Lord have mercy!” No school this coming Monday. It’s Martin Luther King Day, a holiday always noted and respected at the various record labels I’ve worked at.
King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 and his last words, “Play it sweet” were directed to his church organ player. Actually, it’s the anniversary of Dr. King’s birthday we celebrate, and it ain’t no surprise there have been many a “cracker” who try to ignore this day. If Dr. King were alive he would have been a fine 92 years old tomorrow.
We here at The Idelic Hour enjoyed dedicating this week’s mix to the spirt of Dr. King’s’ “dream.” When I started this musical journey I didn’t really know where my records would take me. My plan was to start with Dusty’s “Son of a Preacher” and look for songs with soul power.
As I post this show I believe it’s a mix of songs that touches on themes of dreams and “the kingdom.” At the risk of being cheesy and sentimental (ha!) I’d like to suggest that King’s “dream,” his “Kingdom,” is a world where we all get along.
Maybe mother nature is dumping snow and rain on us to tell us something? “Oh, lord have mercy!”
