Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
I came back from a rainy week in Austin to a full house. My mom is in town and staying with us this week. Nice to see ma with my son. I’m sure she has been decompressing from another harsh winter back east.
“I told ya ma, come in February, but you’re always welcome.”
I should have said, always welcome—except when you ask one too many questions. (Ha!) Jewish mothers always ask way too many questions—thousands of questions! It takes patience to understand this family fact. “Blabbing” and asking dumb questions just comes naturally to us Sidels.
Mom and I snuck out had a sushi dinner and even went for an after meal yogurt. I politely teased her about all the questions she was about to ask…
“How many flavors?” “What are these toppings?” “Oh my god—those look like worms.” “Chocolate sprinkles? I love sprinkles!” “What is that, Captain Crunch? “Oh no…oh my god—hot fudge! I want hot fudge!”
What a trip to Yogurtland! We had a big laugh and a great time.
Hey mom—thank you for turning me on to three of my favorite things: sushi, soft ice cream, and music. What delights!
And mom, there would be no Idelic Hour without you. Fuck, there would be no ME without you. Sometimes it may seem like I forget…but nah.
Love ya, ma!
