Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
To my friends far and wide, welcome to 2015’s first episode of the Idelic Hour. It’s been a month since I gave much thought to an Idelic hour playlist. For me it’s been like taking a break from writing in a journal. Today—through songs—I’m not only breaking into a new year, I’m breaking backing back into my psyche.
So, now that I think about it, how do I really feel about 2015? Sadly, at this moment I feel bothered, stressed, and a bit tired of it all. Luckily I began “listening” and digging through the crates early in the week.
As it seems to be every January, I feel the need to simply begin again. By week’s end, my playlist for IH #1 2015, simply put, is my musical start to the new year. With very little music being released in January, “breaking the ice” on an Idelic session is always interesting. After December, a month of compiling all that was great in 2014, I feel compelled to leave much of 2014 behind.
Weighing heavily on this mix are last week’s tragic terrorist attacks in Paris. While trying to remain optimistic, Paris is a serious and sad muse for a start to this new year. I spoke to a friend and co-worker before and after Sunday’s march and memories of the fear and craziness of the LA riots reawoke.
In the end I would say this playlist is an interesting mix of sentimental deep cuts and French songs with sprinkles of 2015. Setting the tone—the new Panda Bear and ’70s French prog gurus Aphrodite’s Child.
2015, let’s go! In the meantime, pray for peace and thank G for the health of loved ones.
