TVD Live Shots: Foreigner, Styx, and
John Waite at the
Honda Center, 6/28

The recent sold-out concert featuring Foreigner, Styx, and John Waite at the Honda Center in Anaheim was a night to remember, a true celebration of classic rock that brought together fans from all walks of life. The evening was filled with legendary hits, epic performances, and unforgettable moments as each band took to the stage to deliver a show that highlighted their enduring appeal and musicianship. This event not only showcased the bands’ iconic songs but also their ability to connect with the audience through music that has withstood the test of time. Pound for pound, one of the best rock shows I have seen in 24’ and it’s really not close.

John Waite kicked off the night, setting a high bar with his impeccable vocals and charisma. The 8-song set comprised classics from his solo work, The Babys, Bad English, and even a few covers. His renditions of hits like “Missing You” were poignant and powerful, reminding everyone why he’s considered one of rock’s great voices.

And Waite’s not just an amazing vocalist, but a consummate storyteller too which bleeds out on stage during every performance. And if you haven’t seen his 2022 documentary, John Waite – The Hard Way, you absolutely should. It’s one of the best I have seen in years and highlights in spades why John Waite is so loved by so many all around the world. Waite has always been one of my favorites, and his incredible performance didn’t disappoint on Friday night.

Styx took the stage next, igniting the venue with their dynamic presence and intricate musical arrangements. Their 11-song set was a perfect blend of rock anthems and ballads, with highlights including “Come Sail Away” and “Rockin’ The Paradise, and “The Best of Times.” The band’s energy was infectious, compelling everyone to stand, sing, and celebrate the timeless nature of their music.

With only two original members left—Tommy Shaw and James “J.Y.” Young—the synergy between the original band and newer members was crystal clear, showcasing their decades of experience and newfound brotherhood. And for those who were there early in the set, original member and bassist Chuck Panozzo came out to a standing ovation during “Lady.” It was was one of the highlights of the set (and show) for me. My two favorite Styx songs, “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade,” were featured in their final encore, which obviously had me smiling ear to ear. What a perfect choice to end Styx’s amazing set.

Foreigner closed out the night with an explosive performance that underscored their status as one of rock’s most formidable acts. Their 10-song set was a hit parade, featuring classics like “Double Vision,” “Urgent,” and “Juke Box Hero.” Each song was performed with such passion and precision that it felt like a new discovery for the audience. Foreigner’s ability to mix powerhouse rockers with stirring ballads showcased the band’s versatility and immense catalog. The chemistry among the band members, combined with their interaction with the fans, made for an electrifying performance.

What struck me the most on Friday night was vocalist Kelly Hansen’s unbridled energy and incredible showmanship. Assuming the reigns once held by Lou Gramm back in 2005 was no easy task. However, Hansen makes it look easy on stage and is probably one of the best frontman I have ever seen. Start to finish, Kelly put the same energy and showmanship into each and every song and fans drank it up like fine wine.

The set ended with an encore featuring “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Foreigner was joined on stage by the Los Alamitos Sound FX Choir and they were simply INCREDIBLE! “Hot Blooded” brought the festivities to a rousing close with the entire house on their feet singing along to arguably one of their most recognized songs. Wow.

The Renegades & Juke Box Heroes Tour was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was a testament to the lasting power of rock music and the talent of three acts that have contributed significantly to its legacy. The performances by John Waite, Styx, and Foreigner were not only musically impressive but emotionally resonant, connecting with the audience on a profound level. The night was a celebration of the songs that have become the soundtrack to many lives, performed with the energy and passion that only true icons can deliver.

For fans who missed this unforgettable night, the good news is that the tour continues. This is a must-see show for anyone who loves rock music, so don’t wait to get your tickets. Witnessing these legends live is an experience like no other, offering a chance to relive the songs that have defined a genre and influenced generations. Make sure to catch them in a city near you; it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
