Friday, 11/9: Mexican Summer’s The Fresh and Onlys with Quilt and DC’s Shark Week at the Red Palace.
Having toured in good company over the years, The Fresh and Onlys, Tim Cohen, Shayde Sartin, Wymond Miles, and Kyle Gibson describe themselves as garage rock. Recently releasing their latest album Long Slow Dance, an album filled with starry-eyed love songs, creates a different version of what most people think of when they hear the words, garage rock. Yes, put that picture of four dudes hanging out in their mom’s garage away, this isn’t that.
Curious? Well, come on out tonight and find out and I dare you to ask a stranger to slow dance with you.
Quilt isn’t your grandmother’s best sewing project—they’re actually a lovely band out of Boston (one of my favorites). Their self titled album released a year ago is a gorgeous listen from start to finish, releasing unexpected snippets of sound you’ll want sewn into your brain. A loud quietness of what freedom might sound like if it were a band. You like freedom, yes?
The last time they were in DC let’s just say I shouldn’t have left the venue, but I did, and I missed them. It was the night Mr. Derecho also decided to swing by. Tonight, I’ll be there early—rain, sleet or snow. You should be there too.
I have been confused by Shark Week for a long time—what is it? After years of living in DC, I found out it’s a week about sharks, but then also found out it’s also a band. I like the band much better.
Also described as garage rock, I hear they put on an insane show. The band released their self-titled EP during actual Shark Week, and I have to say it’s the kind of music I could see sharks digging while they terrorize the streets of DC. Dig it. Bonus: If you stop by Sticky Rice before the show at Red Palace and mention Shark Week, you get Shark Week Happy Hour specials of $3 rails and $1 off beers from 6 to 8pm.
Saturday, 11/10 Trummors with P.G. Six & Alex Minoff at Comet Ping Pong.
If you didn’t snag tickets to St. Stephens to see The Joy Formidable, there is still a burning candle left for you and it’s called Trummors.
The duo, Anne Cunningham and David Lerner, formerly of Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, will enlighten your Saturday night with sweet folk. Their latest record, Over And Around The Clove, just under 30 minutes long will leave you longing for more, but more is what you’ll get if grab a spot on the floor where ping pong tables disappear for the night. It’s the country escape you desire in the city.
Travis Morrison’s band, The Burlies play at DIY venue Paperhaus (4912 3rd Street, NW) with Typefighter and Laughing Man starting at 8:30pm. It is sure to be a one of a kind night, as this is only The Burlies second show and Laughing Man’s return to the stage. Typefighter delivers bluesy sweet folk easy on the ear. Oowee !
Sunday, 11/11: Green River Ordinance at the Rock N Roll Hotel
Out of Fort Worth Texas, Green River Ordinance adds country twang to rock ‘n roll. They released their latest album, Texas Under Fire, fully funded by their fans via a Kickstarter campaign. A cool side feature to these Texans is their giving nature, setting up a website to buy some of their songs with all profits going to charities. Catch these bighearted Texas men Sunday night at the hotel, as you have no excuse if you don’t work on Monday.
With Monday being Veterans Day, you have one more day added to your weekend for more live music to add to your weekend lineup.
Monday, 11/12: Robert Schwartzman at Iota
You may know Robert Schwartzman as the lead vocalist of ROONEY or the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, cousin of Nicolas Cage, oh—and brother of Jason Schwartzman. Robert released his first solo album Double Caprico last year, as a not-for-profit release, with all profits being donated to the Tibetan Healing Fund. Catch this generous guy, without his entourage, via his solo act at the intimate Iota in Arlington, VA.
