This past weekend was a hurricane. Between beating deadlines and buying non-perishables for the (zombie) apocalypse, not much live music happened. This must change this weekend, so get your Halloween costume off and run wild in the streets of DC to make 1, 2 or 3 shows a night—it’ll be good for you.
Friday, 11/2: 9:30 Club Presents The Caribbean with More Humans and Harness Flux at U Street Music Hall. Get there early—doors at 6pm.
DC is wealthy in the good music spread, but what’s different about The Caribbean is the island they have created for themselves. It isn’t easy to google them and find a ton of youtube videos or bandcamps. It’s a special gift offered to you in cupped hands brought up to your ears, and you’ll hold them dear.
It may be because they aren’t the skinny-jeaned, young folks you’d catch on a Brooklyn corner. They’re a mature trio, heavy in spirit, and while it’s frustrating for some not to get an instant feed on a band, it’s also quite lovely. Go ahead and dip into The Caribbean.
Supporting The Carribean will be More Humans, a lyrically witty rock band also from DC.
Sometimes you find personalities online that share a love for demolished buildings, which in turn inspires a Twitter follow. That happened with John Masters, aka Johnny Metro—leading to his latest project, Harness Flux. I feel like I need more listens, so get there early with me and discover something new.
Okay, so three DC bands for your Friday night in one sitting. Too much? Not even! The glory of 9:30 Club Presents shows at U Street Music Hall is that their shows are early (end by 10pm).
…Early enough for us to run over to H Street and catch Woods at Red Palace afterwards. Double fisting is always fun; please, let’s do it together.
Woods, the Brooklyn-based band, evokes the same influence as their name, reminiscent of walking alongside trees’ pillow talk, privy to nature’s calls. I know you want to dream in the woods, too. Check out their newest vid for “Cali in a Cup.”
Saturday, 11/3: Ed Hamell Presents Eddie’s Bar, 8:45pm sharp at Fort Fringe – The Bedroom as part of Capital Fringe Festival. It’s music, comedy, and spoken word in one, and I hear it’s a legendary experience—but not for kids, so I am thinking explicit in a good way. Read TVD’s featured post and head out for an unforgettable night, described as “If Night of the Living Dead had a Cheers.”
Sunday, 11/4: Arts & Crafts Toronto band, The Darcys hit DC9. The Darcys will give “A Live Interpretation Of Steely Dan’s Aja”—an original take on the original. End your weekend with a band who’s letting you download their entire cover album for free.
Get there early for Rey Pila, bringing good texture to indie. Si, habla espanol. Even if you don’t understand some of the songs, you’ll still move your shoulders back and front. Te prometo!
Go get you some live music, DC!
