Oh, the weekend, it comes once a week. My past weekend was full. It included catching 3 great shows, the viewing of a real live stalker, scoring a sweet parking spot on H St., NE and then again on U Street, need I say more? Luck happens when you get out and catch live music, so now it’s your turn!
Friday, 10/26 | Hume and Cigarette play FREE at Hole in the Sky (2110 5th St., NE, enter behind the building through the alley way.) According to a Facebook invite, costumes are required and there will be DJs (just as DC likes it). Did I mention, it’s FREE/GRATIS and it starts at 9pm?
This is one of the last shows on Hume’s Fall tour, a hardworking Baltimore (originally from DC) band. Britton Powell tells TVD, “I thought it would be really special to make our DC date free because I feel like we owe a lot to the city and it’s kind of our way of opening the doors and giving back to the city.” Sweet, right?! I want to give them a big ole hug already.
Cigarette, what can I say, soft rockin loveliness!
Get out and support our local DC bands FREE!
Friday, 10/26 | If free and costumes don’t appeal to you, please do head out to the Black Cat for a night of AC Newman and The Mynabirds. AC Newman of the New Pornographers is sure to set your weekend right and has been the recipient of “must see” Twitter buzz from indie celebrities. But be sure to get there early for the delightful appetizer of The Mynabirds, a headliner in their own right. So, while free sounds good, two for one is also pretty enticing.
And don’t forget you can win The Mynabirds’ “Body of Work” 7” single here! So much goodness, how do you guys stand it!!
Saturday, 10/27 | He’s My Brother She’s My Sister play at DC9. Yes, they really are brother and sister, Rob and Rachel Kolar, signed to Park the Van Records. According the LA Times, “Their voices mingle like glamour in the desert and serve up party music for coyotes drunk on champagne.” Umm, that should be enough to get you to the party but if it’s not, there’s word they even have a tap dancer on board. Yee-Haw!!
Sunday, 10/28 | This Sunday we have a double-header at Iota in Arlington. Starting with an early show at 4pm, you can catch Sean Hayes with Birds of Chicago, both providing true gritty folk and soul, not to be missed in such an intimate setting as Iota. Shiver me timbers! It is truly a wealthy gift for your Sunday afternoon.
Come back at 8:30pm for Rebecca Loebe out of Atlanta but originally from Arlington, VA. She describes her music as post-brontosaurus indie folk/crunk. Fun fact, she graduated high school at the age of 16 and went on to study at Berklee-College of Music, smarty pants! Oh yeah, she was on a finalist on some show called The Voice (Team Adam).
Enjoy your weekend! I hope it’s filled with too much good, sweet music. It may be the last time your body can rock softly before the Hurricane shuts down our power for eons!
