TVD’s 9:30 Club September Concert Preview

With the arrival of September comes the end of the summer season, as well as the alleged end of one’s ability to wear white without scrutiny.

While the impending change of seasons is nearly upon us, we here at TVD are sticking to our routine and doing what we do at the beginning of every month: as usual, we’re previewing some of the artists coming to the 9:30 Club and giving you the chance to enter to win tickets to one of the concerts below. Don’t forget to submit your extra entry to one of these shows. Details at the bottom.

Ariel Pink, Thurs 9/13

Lo-fi-psychedelic-indie rockers Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti released Mature Themes, the follow-up to their breakthrough debut album, Before Today, last month. The group will tour the United States in support of the new record throughout September before heading overseas to Europe in November.

Catch Ariel Pink this Thursday when they stop at the 9:30 Club along with touring mates BODYGUARD and Moon Diagrams.

The Feelies, Fri 9/14

During The Feelies’ nearly 20-year hiatus, many of their fans doubted if they would ever have the opportunity to see them perform live again or hear new material from the group. However, fans of the band can now able to put their worries aside—The Feelies have recently reunited and are in the midst of touring in support of Here Before, the band’s first new album since 1991. Want to catch the Feelies when they make a stop in DC on Friday? Stay tuned, details will be announced very soon.

Joe Jackson at Strathmore, Sat 9/15

Joe Jackson will be stopping at the Music Center at Strathmore this upcoming Saturday to play not only his own classic hits, but songs from his forthcoming album, The Duke, a tribute to jazz composer Duke Ellington. Performing alongside Jackson will be jazz violinist Regina Carter.

Gossip, Mon 9/24

Three-piece group Gossip first found major success with the release of their 2006 breakthrough album, Standing in the Way of Control, with the single of the first name eventually going to #1 on the UK Indie Rock Chart. Since their initial success, group members have gone on to pursue solo endeavors. Perhaps most notably, lead singer Beth Ditto released a solo EP and dabbled in modeling, opening the Jean Paul Gautier spring fashion show during last year’s Paris Fashion Week. The garage/dance rock group is currently touring in support of their newest album, A Joyful Noise and will be stopping at the 9:30 Club on Monday, September 24th.

David Byrne & St. Vincent at Strathmore, Sun 9/30

What’s better than going to a David Byrne concert or going to a St. Vincent concert? Going to a David Byrne and St. Vincent concert. The Talking Heads frontman and former Polyhonic Spree group member originally met in 2009. From there, the two went on to appear on each other’s albums, eventually coming together and collaborating on Love This Giant, released this week on 4AD Records. The duo will soon be embarking on a tour in select cities and will be stopping by the Music Center at Strathmore on Sunday, September 30th.

Crystal Castles, Sun 9/30

Ethan Kath and Alice Glass, better known by their moniker Crystal Castles, will be playing two headlining shows at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th. The duo have released multiple albums during the duration of their career, all to critical acclaim and commercial success. The two are also notorious for their over-the-top, interactive live shows. We have a pair of tickets for Crystal Castles’ show on the 30th that one lucky TVD reader will win later this month.

While summer’s days are numbered, there never ceases to be an assortment of awesome artists and bands rolling through the DC area. Stay tuned for information about how to win a pair of tickets to one of these great shows, and for an extra entry into any giveaway of your choice, tell us your favorite song about “times a-changing.”
