Matthew Dear, Thurs 11/15 at U Street Music Hall
The multi-talented Matthew Dear is a DJ, dance-music producer, and experimental pop artist. Matthew Dear’s eccentric electronic sound is sure to make a lover out of anyone who ever thought electronic beats weren’t deep-filling. His latest album Beams plays with deep personal vulnerabilities through his lyrics and makes them acceptable with his added beats. He’s stated, “I’m about four to five different people at any given time. By allowing all of those different personalities to exist… the most pure and direct self can come through in the music.” I think we can all agree that this is perfectly acceptable when the result is as genius as dear Matthew.
G Love and Special Sauce, Fri 11/16
G Love, the harmonica-guitar-playing, soul-country-folk-Americana man is coming to sing you sweet love with a side of special sauce. Just when you think he’s going to break out in a rap, he continues down the bluesy road in his latest album, Fixin to Die, an inspiring collaboration with the Avett Brothers, leaving behind old ways for new-but-familiar sounds.
An electronic composer out of Baltimore, Dan Deacon is known for showing his audience a good time. His latest album America came out via Domino in late August, an ode to the country he recently rediscovered. But don’t let good times and electronic beats mislead you; his album is deep. Deacon states, “The inspiration for the music was my love of cross-country travel, seeing the landscapes of the United States, going from east to west and back again over the course of seasons. The lyrics are inspired by my frustration, fear and anger towards the country and world I live in and am a part of. As I came closer to finishing the album these themes began to show themselves more frequently and greater clarity. There seemed no better world to encapsulate both inspirations than the simple beauty found in the word America.” America. Let’s shout “Dan Deacon for President!”
The Magnetic Fields, Sun 11/18 at Sixth & I
The Magnetic Fields is lead by songwriter-producer-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt, out of New York City. In support of their latest album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, in which none of the songs are over three minutes long, the band has been touring constantly throughout 2012. The smart and quirky lyrics are sure to make you magnetically attracted to the field they have created. “In “All She Cares About Is Mariachi,” Mr. Rhyming Dictionary gloriously rhymes Saatchi & Saatchi with hibachi and Liberace. “I live in a Mexican neighborhood in L.A. and I hear a lot of different kinds of Mexican music but curiously absent is mariachi. So I like the idea of a mariachi superfan,” says Merritt.
Hip-hop staples in any dance club or protest, Public Enemy’s songs have lasted through decades. Not stopping anytime soon, Public Enemy just released their 12th studio album, The Evil Empire of Everything, keeping with their politically charged theme. Consisting of Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and his S1W group, and DJ Lord, this show is sure to sell out fast.
