Spiritualized, Thurs 5/10
Spiritualized is the psychedelic-space rock-dream pop band from Rugby, Warwickshire. While the band has been together since 1997, Jason Pierce (also known by his stage name, J. Spaceman) is the only sole permanent member of the band, composing and singing all of the band’s material.
Spiritualized will be taking the 9:30 Club stage on May 10th as they tour in support of Sweet Heart Sweet Light. Of the band’s seventh album, Rolling Stone says, “The record finds Piece working on the familiar grand scale of past Spiritualized discs while emphasizing simpler, bolder melodies.”
Mark Lanegan Band, Fri 5/11
Mark Lanegan is perhaps best known as the lead vocalist of grunge band Screaming Trees. Following the band’s break-up in 2000, Lanegan went on to join Queens of the Stone Age, as well as form The Gutter Twins, a collaborative project with Greg Dulli. Lanegan has gone on to collaborate with a variety of fellow musicians throughout his career. Mark Lanegan will be taking the 9:30 Club stage on the 11th in support of his newest album, Blues Funeral, which contains Lanegan’s first new material since Bubblegum, released in 2004. Upon its release in February, the album garnered a great amount of critical acclaim and positive reviews, with many critics praising Lanegan’s distinct voice, which has previously been compared to Tom Waits.
2 Skinnee J’s, Thurs 5/17
2 Skinnee J’s are no strangers to the music scene. Having been together since 1991, the band has gone through an assortment of line-up changes, as well as agents, management, and record labels. The band’s current manager, A.J. “Stumpy” Johnson, allegedly won the band while playing a game of cards in Las Vegas. 2 Skinnee J’s will embark on their Pre-Apocalypse Now and Forever Tour! this month and will be bringing their rap-alternative-infused music to the 9:30 Club on the 17th.
Soundbites, Sun 5/20
On May 20th, the 9:30 Club will host Soundbites, a concert event of food, music, and change. Soundsbites will benefit D.C. Central Kitchen, a local organization with programs helping the area’s homeless and underprivileged via meals, outreach, and counseling services. This event will combine some of the best music and food D.C has to offer while also doing some good for those in need. Soundbites will feature a DJ set by Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, Bone, Fur and Feathers, The Archives, and Nappy Riddem, as well as feature food tastings from local area restaurants including Shake Shack, Jackie’s, Pepe, Cork, Harry’s Smokehouse, and many more.
The Dandy Warhols, Tues 5/29
Whether you realize it or not, you have probably heard The Dandy Warhols before. They are probably best known for the song “Bohemian Like You,” which has been used in a countless amount of commercials and television shows, or “We Used to Be Friends,” which also helped them attain a great amount of commercial success. The alternative rock/indie pop group, based out of Portland, Oregon, will be coming to the 9:30 Club on the 29th in support of their eighth studio album, This Machine, released last month.
