It’s a new month, and that means plenty of new 9:30 Club shows to get excited about. Here’s your March preview and an extra chance to win tickets to the show of your choice from below—don’t forget to answer the challenge at the bottom! Here are four shows spanning the gamut, featuring artists who have played music for decades.
Jukebox the Ghost with Matt Pond, Sat 3/16
Yep Roc Records artist Jukebox the Ghost is a Philadelphia-born, Brooklyn-based three-piece rock band. Ben Thornewill (vocals, piano), Tommy Siegel (vocals, guitar), and Jesse Kristin (drums) have been around since 2006, releasing their last album, Safe Travels, in 2012. Tommy Siegel has a local connection, a partnership with DC’s Ryan Little, for the record label Bad Friend Records.
“It felt like the music was finally growing with us—Songs that relate to who we are as people right now, not who we were when we were 19 or 20,” Siegel said. “This record is more heartfelt; part of that came from not worrying about exactly what kind of music we were supposed to be making and instead just working on songs that felt genuine and natural at the time.”
Get there early for the opener, Matt Pond—a staple in the indie music world, creating music since the early 2000s, and a headliner in his own right. Catch Chris Hansen and the newest tour lineup, including The Pauses‘ Tierney Tough, singing alongside Pond this Saturday night.
Balkan Beat Box, Tues 3/19
Balkan Beat Box trio, Ori Kaplan (former member of Gogol Bordello), Tamir Muskat, and Tomer Yosef blend their musical influences into a new style of music. They blend electronic music with hard-edged folk music from North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe, sure to bring out your red dancing shoes.
New York-based, BBB released their last record, Give, in 2012, an electro/world sensation. They are sure to hit any musical spot you are in the mood for, so keep your eyes peeled for your chance to see them for free!
Lucero, Wed 3/20
Lucero has been around since the late ’90s, creating what they call “bohemian country.” Women and Work is the band’s latest album, which they describe as a love letter to Memphis, their hometown in Tennessee.
Lucero will bring their country love to the city of DC this month, and you have a chance to win a pair of tickets to your country in the city.
Sigur Ros, Sun 3/24 at the Patriot Center
Icelandic band Sigur Rós, fronted by Jonsi Birgisson, has been described as a life-changing experience since 1994. The long-awaited Valtari album was released in 2012. An album with no English words, it transcends the language barrier with its landscape of sound.
It is needless to say that Sigur Rós is a master of the beautiful. As Sigur Rós has explained before, the only way to truly experience the new material is accompanied by new visuals, new lights, and new stage set, “the only way you’re going to experience this stuff outside crappy YouTube clips in the coming months.” This show is a must-see for any fan, and you have to see it live to truly experience all that Valtari has to offer.
Stay tuned throughout the month for more info about how to win a pair of tickets to each of the above shows. For an extra entry into the giveaway of your choice, tell us below, your favorite album from any of the four bands above.
Get to the club, and good luck, Music Freaks!
