It’s August already! Although its arrival snuck up on me, that just means there’s another round of excellent shows coming to the 9:30 Club all month long. With that being said, here is your August preview and an extra chance to win tickets to the show of your choice from the list below.
M.H. stands for Max Holiday, or rather the 20-year-old composer and lead vocalist behind M.H. & His Orchestra. Their debut album titled The Throes was released in July and crosses genres between R&B, Calypso, Latin, and indie pop.
The orchestral spectacle that Holiday and his merry band bring to shows is a sight to behold and hear. Catch the eleven-piece bring its symphonic beats to the 9:30 Club on Friday, August 9, and see for yourself. Get there early to see local DIY tastemakers Paperhaus perform.
The Killers, Sat 8/10 at Merriweather Post Pavillion
In June 2012, The Killers released a trailer for their new album Battle Born. With the album also came the renewal of The Killers into the current music stratosphere. The band have since been eager to get back out on the road in both American and European cities alike.
“I feel like there are a lot of live moments on this album, more than we’ve ever had before,” says frontman Brandon Flowers. “I feel like people are going to be able to relate to and understand these songs. Pound for pound, this is our strongest record, and I’m really excited about it. We’re starting to feel more comfortable being what we are. And we’re proud of what we are.”
In 1980, millions of UK viewers saw Adam and the Ants perform “Dog Eat Dog” on Top of the Pops. Now it’s 2013, and college students post updates on Facebook about seeing Adam Ant at their local venues with the same charisma and costumes that he had over 30 years ago.
In 2010, Adam formed a new band called Adam Ant and The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse. He released his new album Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter in January of this year. The album has been described as a musical autobiography about Adam’s life and things that interest him. Currently, Adam is bringing his new sound around the US and UK alike.
Thievery Corporation, Fri 8/16 or Sat 8/17
“To see Lou Lou, a Persian singer singing in Farsi, as America debates on a war with Iran, on stage with band members from all corners of the earth singing in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and so on, it makes people wonder…and if you can get people to question the things around them, even just a little bit, that’s not such a bad thing.”
Over the course of the past few years, Thievery Corporation has been known to turn their shows into a trip through carnival grounds. It isn’t hard to imagine with a 15-member live band backing the amusement park charade. The band is coming to the 9:30 Club for three nights August 15-17, and the winner will choose between the latter two dates (first date sold out!) to have the experience for his- or herself.
Goodie Mob: Cee-Lo Green, Big Gipp, Khujo, & T-Mo, Sat 8/24
There’s really only one thing to say, and that is that Goodie Mob is back. Formed in Atlanta back in the early ’90s, the group, which stands for “the GOOD DIE Mostly Over Bullshit,” is composed of Cee-Lo Green, Big Gipp, T-Mo, and Khujo. After taking over a decade-long hiatus, the group is working on a new album and a fall tour to accompany it.
Currently, Goodie Mob is back in the studio finishing up a new album titled Age Against the Machine, which will be released later this month. The first single off the album titled “Special Education” features songstress Janelle Monae.
