It’s August, summer is entering its homestretch, and it’s only a matter of time until the fall season is upon us. However, the month isn’t full of all-things-awful (depending how you feel about fall). As usual, we’re previewing some of the artists coming to the 9:30 Club this month and giving you the chance to enter to win tickets to one of the concerts below:

Real Estate’s lo-fi, surf-tinged sound has garnered them gigs with the likes of Girls, Kurt Vile, and Deerhunter, and, most recently, a slot at this year’s Coachella Festival in Indio, California. Not only that, but their self-titled debut album, released in 2009, was a favorite with critics and helped the band get their name on the map.
Not falling victim to the sophomore slump that haunts many of their peers, Real Estate released Days, their second album, late last year on Domino Records to positive reception. The New Jersey quartet is currently playing an assortment of headlining shows across the East Coast and will be stopping at the 9:30 Club on Sunday, August 12th.
Dirty Projectors (Second Night), Sat 8/18
Talk about back by popular demand – after tickets for their August 17th show at the 9:30 Club sold out, Dirty Projectors added another performance for the following night, Saturday the 18th.
The experimental indie rockers are on the road in support of their seventh full-length studio album, Swing Lo Magellan, on Domino Records last month. Also taking the 9:30 Club stage will be Baltimore-based folk duo Wye Oak.
My Morning Jacket at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Sat 8/18
As any of their ardent fans (myself included) would tell you, My Morning Jacket is one of those bands that never ceases to put on an incredible show. With three live albums included in their discography, the Louisville, Kentucky-bred psychedelic group has garnered a reputation as one of those “can’t miss” bands.
Have yet to experience My Morning Jacket for yourself? You’re in luck. The group will be stopping at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, August 18th in support of Circuital, released last year. Also taking to the Merriweather stage will be fellow American rock group Band of Horses.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Wed 8/22
Since members Anton Newcombe, Matt Hollywood, Ricky Rene Maymi, Patrick Straczek, and Travis Threlkel originally formed The Brian Jonestown Massacre in the early ’90s, the group has gone on to develop an almost cult-like fanbase.
While heavily influenced by music of the ’60s, the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s sound spans multiple genres, including psychedelic, electronic, and experimental. The San Francisco-based group will be stopping in DC on the 22nd in support of their newest release, Aufheben.
So, there you have it. While summer may be coming to a close, the assortment of awesome artists coming to the area is neverending. This month, we’ve featured a bunch of rock bands, be they lo-fi, experimental, or psychedelic.
