Returning to their hometown of Washington, DC, for three back-to-back shows at the 9:30 Club is duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, better known as Thievery Corporation.
The pair has been producing and recording songs that, according to their bio, “defined an entire genre of music and crystallized their distinct ‘outernational sound’ aesthetic” for more than sixteen years. Thievery Corporation’s sound can’t be pinpointed down to an exact genre. It’s rather eclectic, possessing a little bit of everything from dubstep, to protest music, to sounds influenced by those of various countries and cultures, which are represented by the troupe of supporting artists who join them on stage.
Coming back to their hometown, the electronic duo are playing the 9:30 Club three nights in a row, starting this Thursday, August 15, and wrapping it up on Saturday, August 17. Though we can’t give away tickets to their sold-out Thursday show, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to one of the remaining shows. The winner will get to select either Friday’s, August 16, or Saturday’s, August 17, show to attend.
In addition to producing and recording their own tracks, Garza and Hilton also founded DC-based recording company ESL Music. ESL stands for Eighteenth Street Lounge, an homage to the Dupont Circle club where the pair met and formed Thievery Corporation. Since its founding in 1996, ESL Music has not only released music by Thievery Corporation, but is also the label for many other unique, electronic, down-tempo artists, including Thunderball, Ursula 1000, and Garza’s own side project, Dust Galaxy.
Through their record label, Thievery Corporation has released six studio albums. The most recent album, Culture of Fear, was released in June 2011.
To win a pair of tickets to see Thievery Corporation at one of their two remaining shows at the 9:30 Club this weekend, drop a comment in the box below naming your favorite DC band other than Thievery Corporation, along with the date of the show, 8/16 or 8/17, that you would like to attend. The winner will be chosen at noon on Thursday, August 15.
Thursday’s, August 15, show is sold out; however, tickets are still available for Friday‘s, August 16, and Saturday‘s, August 17, shows.
