Though it was commonplace to hear it around my house whenever I was a child and ranted too much about Pokemon, nowadays “hush” is a word with some squeaky clean pop associations.
You can get a full serving of what I’m talking about when The Hush Sound come to U Street Music Hall, presented by the 9:30 Club, with Hockey on Friday, May 17. We’ve got tickets to give away, and getting a hold of them is way easier than you think.
Indie darlings The Hush Sound are known for their natural pop talents. The group’s instincts lay somewhere between Vanessa Carlton and a low-key Minus The Bear. Over the years, they’ve amassed a following with their skilled songcraft, full of melodic fish-hooks baited with relatable lyricism.
Though they went through a hiatus from 2009 to 2013, the band is now back and in full motion. They’ve already pumped out the two-track single “Forty Five,” full of fresh compositions, with a full-length effort on the way—possibly a 2013 release.
Co-headliners Hockey deliver family-friendly pop tunes full of clean guitar, ’80s synth work, and catchy choruses. The group has just released their sophomore album Wyeth Is. With strong nods to The Strokes or the Kooks, their compositions turn on fun and simple singalongs.
So, how can you get your hands on such a deal? It’s easy! In the comments below, give us your favorite pop-inclined indie rock band. I’ve got a wicked guilty pleasure for pre-Pop Etc. songs from Chris and Jon Chu, so I’m gonna have to go with The Morning Benders.
The winner will be chosen at noon on Thursday, May 16. Tickets are still available.
