of Montreal release their highly-anticipated new EP thecontrollersphere via Polyvinyl on Tuesday, April 26th, as a bright blue 12″ (oooh). Two days later, the Athens, Georgia-based collective hits up 9:30 Club, on Thurs (4/28), and we have a chance for you to win a pair of tickets.
Of the new EP’s five tracks, you can stream “Flunkt Sass vs the Root Plume” over at NPR, and Polyvinyl is offering “Black Lion Massacre” as a free download. NPR describes thecontrollersphere as “reliably weirder and grander,” which is how I would describe of Montreal’s frontman Kevin Barnes.
Kevin Barnes gets some help on that front from his brother David, who doesn’t play an instrument but is the Art Director for the band. David creates the album covers, videos projected on stage, and music videos for the band, and his newest creations include fat suits “with Glenn Beck’s face morphing out of the stomach so you’re just a big, loud, stupid head.”
You know you want to see them perform their psychedelic art-pop in those suits. I mean, C’MON!
Other fun facts about of Montreal that I must mention:
Yes, the “of” is lowercase. The band is supposedly named after one of Kevin Barnes’ exes, who was “of Montreal.”
Their song “Wraith Pinned to the Mist” was used in the Outback Steakhouse commercials.
One of the highlights of my concert-going life was seeing them sing “Day Man” from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at the Electric Factory IN PHILLY ON HALLOWEEN. (Please excuse the caps lock, a testament to how much the memory still thrills me.)
