Tomorrow, April 5th, catch a fire at the Montserrat House! Brooklyn-based Super Hi-Fi joins DC’s Nappy Riddem in a fanfare of dub and African rhythms.
Super Hi-Fi, the band led by Ezra Gale, evangelizes West African funk and jazz with a wildly popular revue called the “Afro-Dub Sessions.” The show features jam sessions with acts such as Subatomic Sound System and Victor Axelrod (aka Ticklah). They’ve shared stages with psychedelic roots band Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad and other East Coast-based bands, such as Rubblebucket and Debo Band.
Hi-Fi’s talent doesn’t stop short of the band. Its members also lend their talents to bands such as the soulful Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, People’s Champs, Dub is A Weapon, Boy Without God, and Rubblebucket.
Gale has substantial history in fusion reggae sounds. Gale has been associated with Beats Antique’s David Satori and was part of the storied pilgrimage to Lagos where their band, Aphrodesia, played for Femi Kuti at the Afrika Shrine. Now, with Hi-Fi, Gale takes static dub rhythms and blends them with polyrhythmic afrobeat measures. The band has already stirred it up with a loyal following in the Brooklyn music scene since 2010.
Super Hi-Fi will share the stage with DC’s Nappy Riddem. The latter’s album, One World Sovereignty, gets the remix treatment with an EP that is currently #1 on Beatport. The One World Sovereignty Remix EP #1 will get a wider release on iTunes, Juno and other outlets next Tuesday, April 9th.
Nappy Riddem, made up of Rex Riddem and Mustafa Akbar, weave dub, reggae and ’70s soul to make Sovereignty. Fort Knox Five amplifies the liberating sounds within Riddem’s album with dynamic electronic motifs.
We’re giving away two Super Hi-Fi 7″ vinyl singles from Electric Cowbell Records. You and a friend will be stoked to know we also have two tickets for tomorrow’s show, so you each will walk away with a 7″ and a ticket. Reggae regularly touts the theme of “one love, one world.” What is your favorite reggae jam with “world” in the title or lyrics? I’m a Maxi Priest fan, and I love the jam, “Wild World.” The winner will be chosen tomorrow at noon and must confirm the tickets via email by 3pm!
