TVD Recommends:
We Fought the Big One 9th Anniversary Party at Marx Cafe, 4/5

One of our favorite DJ nights, hosted by two of our favorite people, turns nine tomorrow night—and they’re throwing one hell of a party. Rick Taylor and Brandon Grover’s We Fought the Big One returns to Marx Cafe on Friday, and we’d think you’d be remiss to miss it. Official details:

We’re pulling out all the stops this Friday night to celebrate the 9-year-anniversary of We Fought the Big One, our monthly Belgian beer-fueled, post-punk DJ party! You want drink specials? You got ’em! From 10PM – till closing, Marx will be offering Belgian-beer Happy Hour prices: Chimay will be $6 (normally $9) and Palm will be $5 (normally $8).

Plus a brand new We Fought the Big One Mix CD for 2013! Curated by the WFTBO DJs, it features a trove of left-of-field treasures and post-punk faves—including many tracks that have never been released on CD before. CDs will be available in limited quantities at the DJ booth. In years past, we’ve given them away free, but this time you’ll have to fork over $5 for one of them. Again, supplies are limited—if you want to make sure you get one, show up early.

We will also have a limited number of We Fought the Big One T-shirts and posters on offer. T-shirts are $10. Posters are $3. Again, supplies are limited.

And most importantly, our guest DJ this Friday is legendary post-punk iconoclast Jowe Head from Swell Maps and the Television Personalities! By the time the punk explosion hit in 1976, Swell Maps had already been making incendiary sounds for a number of years, having formed in 1972 (!), Swell Maps were a key “founding father” in the evolution of noise pop, influencing everyone from Jesus & Mary Chain to Sonic Youth and Big Black. Soon after Swell Maps disbanded, Jowe went on to work with cult indie pop favorites the Television Personalities and also recorded a number of genre-bending solo records.
