Tonight, July 3rd, at the U Street Music Hall, will mark the day when Latin, dub, reggae and funk get shaken up to the tune of Tropical Bass. The lineup, led by the Empresarios, also features Poirier, Boogat, Alma Tropicália, and more!
Coincidentally, Empresarios will see the release of Volume EP today, the same day as the show. The EP features “Rompan Fila,” a folksy Latin tune with articulate brass harmonies and a dub riddim.
Playing alongside them this evening is Alma Tropicália, a psychedelic ’60s-era folk pop group who draws inspiration from Os Mutantes. Having performed at the Hall before, Alma Tropicalia will keep the crowd footloose and energetic.
Montreal-based Poirier is a producer with a mad lexicon of Latin and Caribbean grooves. Recently signed to Ninja Tune Records, Poirier got his start within the minimal techno scene in Canada. As of late, he’s sharpened his teeth on hip-hop and Latin vocal arrangements. The result is a sound a producer might envy. Poirier went on to forge a partnership with Boogat, a vocalist, writer and producer of Mexican and Paraguayan heritage. Boogat’s breadth of work consists of singles, EPs and mixtapes that holds nuances of Tropical Bass and Latin hip-hop.
District favorites Fort Knox Five and Thunderball (as Fort Knox Five vs. Thunderball) will be part of this party and keep the funk alive with a 4-turntable performance. And when you thought it might be done like disco, Maracuyeah DJs will add their expert mix of traditional Afro-Latin with strokes of Andean pop. The evening will be rounded out with DJ Jayclue of QDup Foundation. Having remixed the likes of Fort Knox Five, Nappy Riddem, Thunderball, and others, Jayclue seems a perfect fit to wrap up the party in fanfare-like fashion. Just keep your ears open to all the familiar sounds he deconstructs to make his own.
With an array of Portuguese, French, Spanish, Patois, and English arranged in this mighty mix of a show, you might want to second guess any existing plans on Independence Eve. U Street Music Hall and guests are prepared for the “tropical” storm bound to hit. Don’t miss this!
