The Pink Line Project curates a summer music series aimed at highlighting local music. The Glow Sessions take place at the Heurich House Museum in DC, an enchanting backdrop for this Thursday’s musical delight, Cigarette.
Six closely bonded friends—Jonathan Howard, Richard Howard, Drew Hagelin, Ben Brown, Evan Napala, and Johnny Ward—released their full length album Gush this past March, which premiered here at TVD.
Gush is the band’s first full-length album; however, you won’t hear the same seven songs on rotation. New songs are often played, and older gems you might only hear once bring an element of mystery to their live show.
In terms of the band’s size, Napala says, “It’s a big band, but the sound is not that huge. There are many subtleties.” The subtleties Napala speaks of are threaded through each song. For example, “Do, Find My Love” starts off as a tender plea for what one might think is a lost love but later evolves into a seductive dance. The song is laced with hints that love is not so much a pursuit, but rather a challenge, as it is the beholder keeping it in the dark. A love song reaching the true depths of the heart.
Jonathan Howard elaborates, “I really love our band—imperfection is something we accept. There’s always something we mess up, but there’s an imperfection within all the songs we write that shows exactly how fragile our songs are, because it’s never perfect. There are flaws, but we all relate to them and accept it.”
Come Thursday, imperfection is not what the listener will hear. Instead, plan on the band’s special gift, perfectly unwrapped and ready for the taking.
Take hold of Cigarette this Thursday, as it isn’t often that they play live. Be sure to bring a blanket to sit on and a picnic if you so desire for a lovely night nestled in a historic garden. The evening starts at 7PM and ends by 9PM. Buy your advance tickets, for it will sell out.
