TVD First Date: The O’s

Taylor Young (Vocals, Guitar, Kick Drum, Xylophone)

My first record…I’m gonna have to say it was Glen Campbell’s Gentle On My Mind. My dad used to travel a lot, and he had the opportunity to bump into a couple of my favorites like Roy Orbison and Glen Campbell. I was given my folks’ and our close family friends’ record collections in the early 90’s and this is the record that I really remember sitting around and listening to first.

Many years and many records later, I was reorganizing my collection and ran back across this album. I put it on, and after giving the vinyl sleeve a once-over, I realized how many amazing songwriters were represented on this album: Donovan, Jimmie Rodgers, Harry Nilsson, and Roy Orbison to name a few. The stories of my dad eating M&Ms with Roy after the Big D Jamboree or running into Glen for the second time at McDonald’s started to creep back into my mind.

That all being said, The O’s started to cover “Bowling Green” from this album at shows and it’s always a party when we crank it out.

Favorite vinyl cover, it’s gotta be Sing It Again Rod by Rod Stewart. Not to say I don’t see a million of these lyin around used record stores, but it doesn’t take a genius to realize that a vinyl cover in the shape of a scotch glass is totally killer.

Favorite place to buy vinyl is a two parter. Used vinyl at the original Half Price Books and Records in Dallas, TX. It is a monstrosity of a record zone, half the fun is pickin through their collection every 2 months. For new vinyl I will always got to Good Records in Dallas, TX. It is a gem and a treasure.

John Pedigo (Vocals, Banjo, Lowebro, Tambo, Harmonica)

It’s difficult to say exactly what my first record was, because I inherited my 3 older brothers’ entire collection whilst implementing my own. The one that sticks out the most was a Nazareth record that I literally wore out. It didn’t work after I had it for a few years. Then I think my friends and I played Tron with it. (I still have a scar above my eye.) That album was / is awesome. What a collection of hits. I also was handed down a Rod Stewart picture-disc that I literally threw in a fire – Blondes Have More Fun. Ouch!

I gotta say that that record [Blondes Have More Fun] is easily my favorite album artwork. It is awesome. Rod and a hot chick with long 80’s butt. I mean, look at the distance! Geez, I was so young and dumb then. Now I’m just old and dumb.

Oh, the cycle.

The O’s sophomore album ‘Between The Two’ was released just yesterday, February 8 on vinyl (AND super limited edition 8-track. Really.)
