So, yea…I think there’s a Record Fair tomorrow? Anyone hear anything?
I know, we’ve been beating you over the head with it all week, but we’re excited about our little event tomorrow and the DJs we’ve lined up. Next up in our little getting to know you series: DJ Mogo Gogo.
I caught the DJing bug some time during the previous millennium doing college radio. Between 2004-2006, I did a regular monthly DJ night “The Happening” at Saint Ex, playing a broad range of mostly obscure 1960’s music from compilation CDs and reissue LPs.
I always liked records, but my real vinyl epiphany happened when I went to a three day Easter Holiday mod /soul / garage / psychedelic sixties theme weekender in London. The whole scene was sensational and I was totally blown away by the music. The selection by the DJs was much broader and deeper than I imagined. Even though the music was old, the sounds seemed really fresh, and the people there were young and lively, enthusiastically dancing and partying to these totally obscure tunes, all spun from vintage original records.
I was instantly seduced by the allure of those rare 45s spinning on the decks, and I decided that if I was going to keep DJing, that was the only way to do it.
I started focusing entirely on obtaining fuzzy, funky, groovy, freaky and wyld tunes from that era on 7″ singles with an emphasis on danceability.

Recently I’ve been doing guest DJ spots at several local nights including the Wag (RIP!) at Black Cat, Fuzz at Velvet Lounge and Party Lights at Dodge City. I don’t have any current regular gigs, but if anyone out there is interested in doing a one off or monthly 60’s garage / mod / psych thing, get in touch.
What would I like to find at the DC record fair? Maybe some of the eBay records I keep getting outbid on!
